Opening defeat leaves England with tough task

Holders England were beaten by France in their Euro 2025 opener on Saturday evening, the defeat leaving Sarina Wiegman's side with a tough task to qualify for the knockout stages given the strength of their group.

For the opening 15 minutes in Zurich there were plenty of positive signs for England as Lauren James dictated much of the play and had a hand in what looked to be an opening goal, Alessia Russo's strike being disallowed however for offside in the build-up.

But from that moment onwards the game started to turn France's way as Delphine Cascarino in particular caused problems down the right-hand side, from where she set Marie-Antoinette Katoto up for an easy finish.

Holders England were stunned and a difficult route back into the game became a mountain to climb just minutes later as Chelsea's Sandy Baltimore made the most of hesitant defending to curl a second past club-mate Hannah Hampton.

France had further chances after half-time before Wiegman's substitutions turned the game back in England's favour, Kiera Walsh netting from the edge of the penalty area and a goallines clearance preventing what would have been a precious equaliser.

Marginal decisions in the first-half went against England, the offside call for Russo's goal and a claimed foul in the build-up to France's second, but Wiegman admitted afterwards that her side had 'created their own problems' with possession given away far too many times.

That leaves the manager searching for the right solution to beat a Dutch side who eased past Wales in the other group game and knowing that defeat will end England's defence of their trophy before it has really begun.
