Carsley hails England - and eyes hat-trick

England's Mens Under 21's are European Champions again after a dramatic extra-time victory over Germany in Slovakia meant they retained the title they won in 2023.

After a sluggish start to the group stages of the competition, including a defeat at the hands of the Germans, Lee Carsley's squad fully deserved their triumph after knockout victories against Spain, Holland and then in the final where they raced into a two-goal lead before being pegged back.

Carsley was forced to shuffle his options prior to the tournament, as the Club World Cup deprived him of some his first-choice players, but everyone in the England group played their part in the success.

It caps an incedible season for the manager himself, one that began back in the autumn with him in charge of the senior squad for the Nations League campaign, being seemingly on the verge of getting that role permanently before reverting back to working with the U21s.

Carsley told Channel 4 after Jonathan Rowe's dramatic winner, shortly after being introduced as a substitute: "I'm so proud, not of myself but of the players and the commitment that they have shown the last 28 days.

"All the instruction we have tried to give to them, they have taken in on board so quickly. They have so much belief, this squad believe that they can win. And that is the kind of players we need."

The broadcaster will also be pleased after taking a punt on screening the tournament with England delivering prime-time success on Saturday night.
