Wycombe Wanderers 0-1 Barnsley

Last updated : 19 March 2023 By Rob Miles

Barnsley left it late but picked up a ninth win in an 11 game unbeaten run, beating a play-off/promotion rival for the third successive game and fourth in the last five outings.

In doing so they increased the gap between themselves and Wycombe but also the play-off chasing pack to nine points.

This is Barnsley's longest unbeaten league run (W9 D2) since a run of 12 Championship matches (W9 D3) between January and March 2021.

They are unbeaten in six on the road (W4 D2), their longest unbeaten run away from Oakwell since a run of seven (W6 D1) in the Championship between January and April 2021.

Barnsley’s last four goals have all come in the second half of matches.

Barnsley gained their 14th league clean sheet of the season and their tally of 29 goals conceded is only bettered by league leaders and Tuesday’s opponents Sheffield Wednesday (23)

It is their most league clean sheets in a season since also gaining 14 in 2020-2021.

This was their eighth league clean sheet on the road, the most in a season since 2018-2019 (11)

This was Barnsley's 21st league victory of the season (from 35 games), only in 14 of their previous 123 years as a league side have they won more, three of which have occurred in the last seven seasons.

Barnsley have now lost only two of their last 21 league games (W15 D3 L2)

They have kept clean sheets in four of the last six matches and three of the last four.

They have kept back to back league clean sheets for only the second time this season – also doing so in October/November v Forest Green and Shrewsbury.

This was the third time this season Barnsley have won 1-0 away from home with a goal in the 85th minute or later (all comps)

It’s Barnsley’s ninth away league win of the season, the same as second placed Ipswich and only leaders Sheffield Wednesday (10) have won more.

The win was sealed by a first goal in English football for Slobodan Tedic, it is the seventh league goal scored by a Barnsley substitute this season - Josh Martin, James Norwoodx2, Adam Phillips, Luke Thomas and Jack Aitchison have also netted from the bench.

Barnsley had a player yellow carded in both first half and second half stoppage time for the first time since September 2021 at Stoke when they had two players booked in first half stoppage time (Brad Collins and Michal Helik) and one in second half stoppage time (Will Hondermarck)

Barnsley had three defenders booked in a match (Mads Andersen, Liam Kitching, Bobby Thomas) for the first time in a league game since 11th September 2021 at Bournemouth (Callum Brittain, Jasper Moon, Michal Helik)

It is the fourth time (all comps) that both Andersen and Kitching have been yellow carded in whilst Kitching has now been booked 12 times this season, three more than any other Barnsley player in 2022-2023.

This one was Kitching’s 20th yellow card in a Barnsley shirt from 75 appearances.

Harry Isted kept his fifth clean sheet in only his eighth game for the club, one less than Brad Collins has managed so far this season in 26 appearances.

This was the 10th meeting between Barnsley and Wycombe and Barnsley have lost only two with this their fifth win.

The Reds have won four of the last five with the one blip a 3-0 Oakwell hammering back in August.

This is only Barnsley’s second clean sheet against Wycombe and their first ever at Adams Park.

Barnsley have now won three of their five visits (D1 L1) including both of the last two.

Wycombe are the 12th opponent Barnsley have restricted to one shot on target or less in 2022-2023.

The total of three shots on target in the game is the lowest in Barnsley’s last 21 games.

Wycombe won 12 corners – the most by an opponent since Middlesbrough on the 26th February 2022 (also 12)

Barnsley’s total of one corner is their joint lowest this season which has now occurred on six occasions but this was only the second time in a league game (also at Sheffield Wednesday)

“We passed the ball well, we attacked well, and had a lot of threats in the Barnsley half.

“We were comfortable going into the second half and it’s really disappointing that we didn’t get anything from the game.
