Manchester United vs Sevilla: Complete head-to-head record

Manchester United fans can be forgiven for being very concerned about having drawn Sevilla in the Europa League quarter-finals. The few past meetings between the clubs have not gone the way of the Premier League side.

Sevilla are also regarded as Europa League specialists, having won four of the last nine editions of the tournament. They know exactly what it takes to win this tournament, although they are in uncharted water when it comes to their league position.

While United are looking to secure third place in the Premier League, Sevilla are down in 13th in La Liga and just two points clear of the relegation zone. They are one of many teams at serious risk of being dragged down in the Segunda Division and that may make United fans feel a bit more confident.

For a lot of United fans, they may as well stay in Seville after the Real Betis second leg. United's last six European knockout ties have been against Spanish opposition in Villarreal, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Real Betis and now Sevilla.

Here's how the two teams have fared in previous meetings.

The very first time the two sides faced each other competitively was in 2018 in the round of 16 of the Champions League. This was when United were being coached by Jose Mourinho.

The game in Sevilla was a particularly poor spectacle and barring a couple of David De Gea saves, neither side ever really looked close to scoring.

There was still a lot of confidence that United could get the job done in the second leg against a Sevilla side limited in goalscorers.

2. Manchester United 1-2 Sevilla - 13 March 2018

This was a serious low point for Jose Mourinho at Manchester United. The Red Devils seemed to approach the game at Old Trafford as if they were already leading the tie and with away goals still in place, it was a dangerous game.

United got what they deserved and Old Trafford was stunned when Wissam Ben Yedder scored in the 74th and 78th minutes, meaning United suddenly needed to net three times in just over ten minutes.

Romelu Lukaku did pull a goal back for United with a few minutes to play but by then, fans were pouring out of Old Trafford and Sevilla were into the quarter-finals.

This was one of those unusual one-legged ties behind closed doors during the COVID-19 pandemic. United were regarded as the favourites to win the Europa League but knew that they had a tough tie to navigate against Sevilla.

United took the lead early on through Bruno Fernandes but former Liverpool man Suso equalised soon after. The Spaniards edged the tight game when Luuk de Jong grabbed the winner with just over ten minutes to play.

United were once again left wondering how they had failed to get past Sevilla.
