England hit six in Wembley waltz

Having seen the build-up to their Nations League game against Portugal dominated by the retirement from international football of Mary Earps, England Women responded in style with six unanswered goals to delight the Wembley crowd.

Sarina Wiegman's side had only managed a draw in Portugal last month but made sure there would be no repeat of that result with a first-half blitz that yielded five goals and a hat-trick for Aggie Beever-Jones, Lucy Bronze and Beth Mead also netting before the break.

The options available between the posts to Wiegman may have narrowed with Earps' decision but a look at the substitutes brought on in this game gives an indication of England's outfield strength.

Alex Greenwood, Fran Kirby, Chloe Kelly and Georgia Stanway were all introduced after half-time, Kelly putting the gloss on the scoreline with the sixth and final goal.

A trip to face world champions Spain is next, this coming Tuesday, before a short break before Wiegman names her squad for the Euros and the chosen party reconvenes for a friendly against Jamaica at Leicester's King Power Stadium and then the trip to Switzerland for the defence of their crown.
