Michael Carrick Slams Grappling in Penalty Boxes

Manchester United interim boss Michael Carrick has launched a stinging critique of the officiating surrounding set-pieces.

Speaking today, Carrick argued that "grappling" between attackers and defenders has gone too far, calling for referees to take a firmer stance.

His comments come as United prepare to face Newcastle tomorrow, with both sides ranking joint-fifth for goals scored from corners.

Carrick pointed out that 27.5% of all Premier League goals this season have come from dead-ball situations, the second-highest rate since 2009, suggesting that the focus on wrestling in the box is overshadowing technical play.
