Barnsley 1-1 Reading

Last updated : 12 December 2019 By Rob Miles

Barnsley opened the scoring yet failed to win for the sixth time this season as they were pegged back by Reading to leave themselves seven points adrift of safety.

They opened the scoring and failed to win on seven occasions in 2017-2018 when they were relegated.

The Reds have dropped 14 points after opening the scoring (D4 L2)

In four of those six matches Cauley Woodrow has been the player to score the opening goal - Barnsley had won 12 of the 16 games in which Woodrow had scored prior to this season but have won NONE of the seven games in which he has struck in 2019-2020.

Ex Sheffield Wednesday forward Lucas Joao scored Reading's equaliser after the Reds defence failed to deal with a corner, the 42nd goal conceded by Barnsley in 21 league matches - however Luton have now conceded more (44)

Barnsley have gone 15 games without a clean sheet, their longest run since a run of 20 between 3rd October 2015 and 9th January 2016 (4 Football League Trophy games, 1 FA Cup, 15 League One)

Barnsley have opened the scoring in three successive Championship games for the first time since September/October 2017 (also 3)

Barnsley have now won just two of their past 15 league matches against Reading (D5 L8) and are winless in their five most recent meetings with the Royals (D3 L2).

Reading are now unbeaten in their past eight away league matches against Barnsley (W5 D3) since losing 3-0 in August 1996.

Barnsley have failed to win any of their last 14 midweek Championship matches (D5 L9) since a 4-2 win at Burton in October 2017.

This was the seventh Barnsley league match to be goal-less at half time this season, however only one - at Wigan - has finished this way.

Toby Sibbick picked up his third booking of the season and is the first Barnsley substitute to be booked since Luke Thomas against Bristol City on the 1st November.

Gerhard Struber has made only 2 substitutions in four of his five games in charge.

Despite scoring only one goal Barnsley had 21 shots in the game, their most since Bristol City at home on the 1st November (24)

Eight of them were on target, their most since Plymouth away in April (11) and their most in the Championship since Bristol City at home in March 2018 (8)
