Why Man Utd refrained from making summer move for Bayern's Leon Goretzka

Manchester United did not make any move for Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka, despite links with the player over the summer.

Goretzka is as it stands out of contract at the end of the season, though is now finally close to agreeing a new five-year contract with Bayern.

Uncertainty over whether he would extend his deal led to speculation in the transfer window that he could leave the club, with speculation suggesting that a host of clubs from around Europe, including United, were looking to land him.

90min understands that Goretzka's representatives did touch base with a host of clubs, given he was eligible to sign a pre-contract in January, but sources close to United insist they did not make an offer - despite listening to what Goretzka's camp had to say.

United's transfer team were not convinced that Goretzka had any interest in move to the Premier League, or indeed to quit the Bundesliga giants.

United have always maintained that they would monitor the situation - but it has now come as little surprise to them, and other interested parties, that Goretzka has agreed fresh terms with the German champions.

Goretzka follows fellow German star Joshua Kimmich in committing his future to the Bavarian outfit, after he signed a few weeks ago.

Bayern's sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic confirmed recently that the club were confident over a new deal for Goretzka, who joined the club from Schalke in 2018.

"He is very important. He is a player who special skills has in midfield, box to box. We are in very good discussions," Salihamidzic told Sky90. "The guys also understand that they want to stay together. That way they don’t go to the limit when it comes to earning. They want to shape an era."
