Luton extend Wednesday’s woeful Hillsborough record to 1 win in 16

Sheffield Wednesday suffered their second home defeat of the week on Saturday as Luton Town came away 1-0 winners.

The visitors had lost their last two matches but almost had the lead inside the first minute when they got in behind the Owls back line, Dawson was slow to react and Hylton went round him at close range but Flint managed to get back and clear the goal bound strike off the line.

Mpanzu wasted another good chance for the visitors midway through the first half, placing a shot wide after Lee’s pass sliced Wednesday open.

The home side improved in the early second half exchanges and Van Aken saw a header saved by Sluga in the visitors goal.

With 20 minutes to go Van Aken was dismissed for a high challenge on Mpanzu inside the Luton half and 5 minutes later the same player punished the Owls by firing a low strike into the goal from the edge of the area.

Wednesday huffed and puffed late on but failed to create a decent chance and Luton almost made it two in injury time when Tunnicliffe struck the base of a post from 20 yards.

The defeat leaves Wednesday on minus 4 points. They have only won once at Hillsborough in 2020 and haven’t scored 2 or more in a home game since December last year.
