Barnsley will play an FA Cup tie at home for the fourth successive game after being drawn against League One Ipswich Town or League Two AFC Barrow in the third round.
All three of Barnsley’s FA Cup ties in 2020-2021 were at Oakwell (against Tranmere in the third round, Norwich in the fourth round and Chelsea in the fifth round) and they will again have home advantage but this time with supporters.
It is the first time Barnsley have had four successive home FA Cup ties since a run of four in 1998-1999 (third round replay, fourth round, fifth round, quarter-final) and they have lost only one of their last four home FA Cup ties – which came against Premier League giants Chelsea who were runners-up at the time and went on to reach the final again.
Ipswich and Barrow must play again following a 0-0 draw in their second round tie at Portman Road, a result which proved to be final game in charge for Ipswich boss Paul Cook.
If Barrow were to get through it would be their first meeting with Barnsley for 52 years, with the sides last meeting in a Third Division game back in January 1970. The two sides have met 19 times in total with the Reds emerging victorious on 14 occasions, including each of the first nine clashes.
They have met on one previous occasion in the FA Cup, a Second Round tie in 1969-1970 when both sides were in the third tier – the Reds running out comfortable 3-0 winners at Oakwell. Unfortunately Barnsley would be eliminated in the next round, 3-2 at Mansfield.
Barnsley and Ipswich meanwhile have met on 47 occasions, the most famous of which the 1999-2000 First Division Play-Off final at Wembley in which Ipswich won 4-2 to secure promotion to the Premier League. They have also met only once in the FA Cup, a fourth round tie in 1989-1990 at Oakwell which Barnsley won 2-0, however they would again be eliminated in the following round, against near neighbours Sheffield United, drawing 2-2 and then 0-0 before finally succumbing 1-0.
