Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea (5-4 Pens): Player Ratings as Lilywhites Advance Into Last Eight

Tottenham secured progression into the last eight of the Carabao Cup after overcoming Chelsea via a penalty shootout on Tuesday night.

The Blues got their just reward for a dominant first-half, with their early superiority capped by Timo Werner's fantastic strike - his first goal for the club.

The Lilywhites were much-improved after the break, however, taking a much more enterprising approach and asking plenty of questions of the visitors' defence. Erik Lamela eventually pulled the hosts' level from close range with ten minutes remaining, setting up a penalty shootout.

A perfect streak of spot-kicks was then broken on the tenth attempt by Mason Mount as his effort rebounded off the post and wide, sending Spurs through.

Let's get into some player ratings...

TOTTENHAM

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Hugo Lloris (GK) - 6/10 - Couldn't do anything about Werner's opener, safe hands throughout.

Serge Aurier (RWB) - 7/10 - Restricted and rash on occasions before the break. Improved when handed a little more freedom in second period. Delivered a couple of fine - and poor - crosses into the area. Impressive overall.

Japhet Tanganga (CB) - 5/10 - Fair to say he was pretty rusty on his first start of the season. Sliced clearance almost led to Callum Hudson-Odoi finding the back of the net. Unspectacular in possession.

Toby Alderweireld (CB) - 6/10 - A pretty uneventful night for Belgian, sound in the air and role seemed to suit him with less space to cover - hiding declining athleticism.

Eric Dier (CB) - 6/10 - Had to pop to the loo which almost led to Chelsea's second, sparking some pretty remarkable scenes. Nice penalty, though.

Sergio Reguilon (LWB) - 6/10 - Responded fairly well after error - and hasty slide tackle attempt - led to Chelsea's opener. So energetic and looked a threat when handed greater freedom to advance after the break. Tackle on Mateo Kovacic in defensive transition a highlight, as was assist for Lamela's equaliser.

2. Midfielders

Gedson Fernandes (CM) - 5/10 - Spurned Spurs' clearest opening in the first period and was pretty erratic in possession. Typically provided energy in midfield.

Moussa Sissoko (CM) - 5/10 - Shoddy in possession but thought he improved as the game wore on, especially defensively with a couple of impressive moments in defensive transition. Poor at cutting out passing lanes when Spurs were in settled shape, mind.

Tanguy Ndombele (CM) - 7/10 - A few neat sequences in a tough first half before taking much more control after the break. Supreme press resistance meant he was able to ride the visitors' counter-press like no other. Another 90 minutes under his belt. Good signs once again.

3. Forwards

Erik Lamela (ST) - 6/10 - I mean, he worked incredibly hard but he's just so infuriating in possession. Decision-making woeful. Tough task, though, and took up some delightful positions between the lines. Poachers effort to bring the hosts level.

Steven Bergwijn (ST) - 5/10 - Anonymous in the first-half before he grew into proceedings after the restart. Poor execution in the final third and was brought off midway through the second period.

4. Substitutes

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg - 6/10
Harry Kane - 5/10
Lucas Moura - N/A

CHELSEA

5. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Edouard Mendy (GK) - 7/10 - Good save from Lamela in the opening period and looked convincing when claiming in the air. Not great at saving penalties, though.

Cesar Azpilicueta (RB) - 6/10 - Sat down Reguilon before setting up Werner's opener. Overall, a characteristically diligent showing from the skipper.

Fikayo Tomori (CB) - 6/10 - Asserted himself pretty well on Spurs' 'forwards', comfortable in possession as well. A steady showing on the whole.

Kurt Zouma (CB) - 7/10 - Had a pretty easy assignment and was rarely made to work. Tackle to deny Gedson in opening period was outstanding.

Ben Chilwell (LB) - 6/10 - Didn't offer a whole lot going forward despite attempts to support Werner down the left. Was tasked with little defensively before being substituted.

6. Midfielders

Jorginho (CM) - 7/10 - Comfortable in possession in opening period when hosts sat off, but was efficient with decision-making and execution of passes. Astute out of possession and was perhaps the key in triggering an effective counter-press.

Mateo Kovacic (CM) - 6/10 - Rode challenges well and provided some verticality with the ball. Influenced waned as contest wore on, though.

Callum Hudson-Odoi (RM) - 6/10 - Struggled to have an influence on the right despite showing tremendous technique with the odd switch of play. Much more of a threat on the left even if he did spurn a golden opening after jigging infield.

Mason Mount (AM) - 6/10 - Key in establishing a fierce counter-press to thwart any Spurs transitions in the first half. Crafty on and off the ball but wasn't at his most influential.

Timo Werner (LM) - 7/10 - Held the width really well out on the Chelsea left which meant he was open for plenty of switches out to his flank. Stretched the Spurs defence. Took goal with sort of ruthlessness he displayed so often at RB Leipzig. The first of many.

7. Forward

Olivier Giroud (ST) - 5/10 - A quiet evening for the French target-man before making way for Tammy Abraham late on.

8. Substitutes

Emerson - 6/10
N'Golo Kante - 8/10
Tammy Abraham - N/A
