The Tottenham lineup that should start against Southampton

After the outrageously controversial announcement and subsequent collapse of the proposed Super League, Tottenham get back to matters on the field on Wednesday evening as they host Southampton.

It will be Ryan Mason's first game as interim head coach after the dismissal of Jose Mourinho following Spurs' 2-2 draw at Everton last time out. Tottenham have picked up just one win in their last six Premier League games, losing three of those, and sit a not-so-super seventh in the table, five points off the top four.

The Saints have also struggled in recent weeks. Ralph Hasenhuttl's men have won just two league games in their previous ten, racking up seven losses in that time.

So, let's take a look at how Spurs should lineup for this one.

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Hugo Lloris (GK) - Has not missed a minute of Premier League football this campaign, keeping ten clean sheets in the process.

Serge Aurier (RB) -
Matt Doherty is likely to be to return from injury but Aurier could get the nod ahead of him, despite some dodgy performances of late.

Toby Alderweireld (CB) -
Spurs have won four of the last six league games Alderweireld has played. Relevant? Maybe not but, given how poor they've been recently, it gives a bit of hope.

Joe Rodon (CB) -
Has shown his quality and how mature he can be in recent weeks and deserves to continue at the heart of the Spurs back line.

Sergio Reguilon (LB) -
Has been the first choice at left-back for the vast majority if the campaign and, with Ben Davies still side lined, is guaranteed to start against Southampton.

2. Midfielders

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (CM) - A real warrior in the centre of the field and gives that bit of bite which could help him overcome his former side on Wednesday.

Harry Winks (CM) -
Somewhat frozen out by Mourinho but, with a new boss, might get more chances on the field. With a League Cup final around the corner too, it could be the time to rotate and give fringe players a chance.

Dele Alli (AM) -
Has started just two league games this campaign but will likely be another to receive a lot more opportunities under a new regime. Has undoubted quality and can really impact proceedings with his creativity.

3. Forwards

Gareth Bale (RW) - Has just ten minutes of action under his belt in the last four league games, but should have the chance to build on his seven goal involvements in 14 Premier League appearances thus far.

Heung-min Son (ST) -
Harry Kane's absence leaves a huge gap in the Spurs side, but Son may step in instead of Carols Vinicius to provide an added bit of pace and movement up top.

Lucas Moura (LW) -
His versatility in advanced areas makes him a useful player all across the front three or four and, this time out, he could start on the left lank as Son moves centrally.
