Serie A Stars To Provide Tough England Test

The Three Lions will begin their preparations for Euro 2020 with a Wembley friendly against Italy on Friday 27 March that should provide a stern test of England's belief that they are genuine contenders to lift the trophy on home soil in the summer.

After the shock of failing to qualify for Russia 2018, Italy have revived their fortunes in fine style under Roberto Mancini with a smooth passage through qualification to match that of Gareth Southgate’s side.

A stronger Serie A looks to have been a help for the former Manchester City manager who has drawn the vast majorities of his squad from the domestic league.

But even in leaner, recent years the Azzurri have had the upper hand over the Three Lions, dominating a Euro 2012 clash that eventually went to penalties before winning the opening game of Brazil 2014.

Following the Italy clash England will take on Denmark on Tuesday 31 March before the pre-tournament games against Austria in Vienna on Tuesday 2 June and a home game against Romania on Sunday 7 June. This will be played at a venue away from Wembley which will be undergoing preparations for Euro 2020 and the Three Lions opener with Croatia one week later.
