Lees error leads to defeat against Swansea

Sheffield Wednesday were consigned to their 22nd defeat of the season on Tuesday evening as Swansea City eased toa 2-0 win at Hillsborough.

Having lost heavily at QPR on Saturday Darren Moore rang the changes with Westwood, Pelupessy and Shaw coming into the starting line up in place of Wildsmith, Urhoghide and Paterson.

After an uneventful opening 20 minutes Wednesday were started to enjoy the better of the game with Palmer, Reach and Bannan producing a trio of crosses that pit Swansea under pressure but ultimately led to little reward. A good move involving Bannan and Reach resulted in Shaw hitting a good shot on target from the edge of the penalty area that Woodman tipped round the far post.

Having managed to get on top, the home side conspired to press the self-destruct button just after the half hour. Bannan played a ball back to Lees who decided to let the ball run beyond him rather than control and in doing so he allowed Ayew to close him down, Lees then failed to shield the ball, getting muscled away by the Swansea striker who advanced towards Westwood before squaring for Lowe to place into the empty goal.

Wednesday looked for a way to get back into the contest early in the second half with Liam Palmer making a couple of good breaks down the right but the home side never got enough bodies into the box to make the attacks count.

Westwood saved the Owls midway through the half, parrying an Ayew shot at close range after the striker had pounced on some ponderous play by Borner but the reprieve was short-lived. With 15 minutes to go Swans substitute Roberts crossed for Fulton to power home a header to make it 2-0.

Wednesday offered little with Green, Kachunga and Brown again failing to make a telling contribution from the bench and with just 5 games remaining they seem destined for relegation as they remain 7 points adrift of safety having played more games than some of the teams they need to chase down.
