Contract situations need to be resolved

Sheffield Wednesday could be without several key players when the Championship season looks to be concluded in June and July.

The EFL have confirmed that the division will restart fixtures on June 20th with each of the 24 teams having 9 games remaining. Wednesday have a number of first team players that are coming to the end if their contracts. Under normal circumstances this would not be an issue as contracts run until June 30th and the season is usually concluded by then. However, in these unprecedented times, a number of games of the 2019-20 season will need to be played in July and any out of contract players will not be eligible to play.

The Owls have moved quickly to extend the contracts of Urhoghide and Pelupessy for a further 12 months meaning that they will be available for selection in July but as things stand a number of players will be out of contract, including Fletcher, Fox, Nuhiu, Forestieri, Winnall and Lee plus players that are on loan contracts.

With hundreds of players set to be out of contract in the Championship next month many clubs are in the same boat. The EFL have put forward a provisional date of 23rd June for clubs to agree short-term contracts, extensions or new deals with such players in order to allow them to play out the 2019-20 season with their current team.
