Newcastle's Squad Separation Explained After Angry Fans Approach Players on Train Home

The reason behind a handful of Newcastle players travelling home separately following their loss at Arsenal has been revealed, after the group were confronted by disgruntled fans on the train.

The Magpies suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at the Emirates, which, despite being the side's first defeat in eight, has seen fan disgruntlement directed at the team, management and the board continue to grow.

The Newcastle team were separated on the journey back up to the north east, with speculation about a dressing room rift emerging.

Danny Rose

Danny Rose, Nabil Bentaleb, Allan Saint-Maximin and Christian Atsu all took the train home, while the rest of the squad flew.

However, according to the Evening Chronicle, there had been no dressing room fallout, and Newcastle had simply offered players a choice of travel after they experienced a bumpy plane journey to London during Storm Dennis.

Footage emerged of the Rose, Saint-Maximin, Atsu and Bentaleb being confronted by Magpies' supporters on the train back, expressing their disappointment.

One supporter said to the quartet: "I'm so disappointed man. We're not bothered about the result," - all while a fellow passenger attempted to push past with eight mugs of tea.

Another fan called the team 'a disgrace' before the supporters were asked to leave the carriage, and according to the Mirror, Steve Bruce has played down the incident and insists there will be no repercussions for the players.

Although Sunday's defeat was the Magpies' first loss since they were beaten 1-0 by Leicester on New Year's Day, Steve Bruce's side have won just one of their last eight Premier League matches.

Stephen Bruce

Bruce had big boots to fill after taking over from Rafa Benitez at St James' Park over the summer.

Although he has guided the side to a relatively comfortable position in mid-table, and recorded wins over Chelsea and Manchester United, Newcastle's style of play has been criticised by fans and has failed to win them over as yet.
