Man Utd consider building new women's stadium as part of expansion plans

Manchester United are pondering the idea of building an all-new stadium for their women's team as part of their plans to redevelop their facilities.

United have been exploring improvements to both Old Trafford and their Carrington training ground, with the goal of building one huge training complex for the men, women and academy sides in the coming years.

While the final details of the plans are not yet finalised, The Telegraph note that United could go as far as to build an entirely new stadium which would be shared by the women's side and the academy.

The current home of the women's and Under-23 sides is Leigh Sports Village, a 12,000-seater stadium on the outskirts of Manchester. The rest of the academy play their home games at Carrington.

Early ideas have included the creation of a new stadium on the same site as Old Trafford, but there are no guarantees that United will push ahead with that.

Numerous architectural and engineering companies have been consulted, with United keen to explore every possible avenue for their upgrades, and a final master planner will likely be determined next year.

While that proposal remains in its infancy, the upgrades at Carrington have been given the green light and United have already settled on who will lead that project.

Described as a 'fundamental redevelopment' of the site, United are expected to create an entirely new complex which will accommodate every team on the books, and discussions are now being held over when to begin that work.

United reintroduced their women's team in 2018, and after winning the Championship title in their maiden season, have been a force in the WSL over the past few years.

They secured a fourth-placed finish in the curtailed 2019/20 campaign and matched that in 2020/21. Now, ten games into the current season, United are sat in the same spot, two points adrift of the Champions League qualification that comes with a top-three finish.
