Jan Vertonghen has admitted he is considering 'the pros and cons' of staying at Spurs beyond this season, as he mulls over other possible options which are on the table.
The 32-year-old's contract is set to expire at the end of the campaign, and with no agreement in sight over a fresh deal, the defender is contemplating leaving the Tottenham Hotspur stadium on 30 June.
And Vertonghen himself said on
"I’m in a process right now that I have to grab a piece of paper and write down the pros and cons of the options I will have soon. I will really have to decide what I want in my career. In three to four years, I will normally return to the place where I will likely settle down.
"I have to start thinking about where I still want to live, what language I want to learn, what culture I still want to live in. And also very importantly: which competitions and prizes I still want to win. I don’t want to regret anything in my career."
Vertonghen has struggled to nail down a permanent place in the Tottenham side since José Mourinho's arrival, but the Portuguese boss has encouraged the defender to tie his flag to the Spurs mast.
The former Ajax defender's agent also hinted that his client may stay in north London after all, telling
"Jan is still super happy at Spurs and loves London. He is still very committed. There's a lot of respect for Tottenham, just like there is a lot of respect from the club towards us. That's logical after eight seasons. There is a connection.
"We haven't reached an agreement as yet, but we don't rule out anything. There's interest in him as a free agent, but Spurs is a very interesting option for us. The door's still open."
Vertonghen may have more time to decide on his future than expected, as the current season may be extended due to the coronavirus, with short-term contracts to potentially be handed out to those whose deals were set to expire at the end of June.
