“I want what Ederson has” - USMNT goalkeeper Matt Turner on what makes Ederson special

New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turned has revealed he hopes to follow in the footsteps of Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson - claiming his technique and attitude are what make him special.

Turner became a breakout star in 2021, recently lifting MLS’s Supporters Shield with the New England Revolution while also being named the league’s Goalkeeper of the Year. He earned 12 overall caps for the USMNT, quickly rising to become a household name.

But despite his stature, Turner still has much to learn - especially from Ederson, it seems.

The American goalkeeper admitted to studying the Brazilian player’s form while speaking to Yael Averbuch West on the latest episode of 90min’s podcast Football Americana.

“I want what Ederson has," said Turner. "It's not just what he can do technically, it's the confidence he has when he does it. It's that, excuse my language, F you attitude he has as a goalkeeper. I think the way that he hurts teams, the way he advances the ball, and teams don't even press him anymore.”

This year alone, Ederson has started 14 Premier League games, conceding only nine goals and keeping seven clean sheets. He’s Pep Guardiola’s number one pick, edging out Matt Turner’s USMNT teammate Zack Steffen.

“That's where I want to go,” he added. “I want to get to a point where a team knows that if they're running through when the ball's coming to my feet, they're just wasting their energy.

"That's the way people view Ederson, in my opinion. That's what I want.”
