Gabriel Jesus Insists City Must Focus on Second Leg After Dramatic Win Over Real Madrid

Gabriel Jesus has insisted that nothing is resolved in Man City's Champions League tie with Real Madrid, following their win on Wednesday.

City secured a huge 2-1 victory in the round of 16 first leg, coming from behind to win at the Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid took the lead on the hour mark, but late goals from Jesus and Kevin de Bruyne sealed the win for the Citizens.

Jesus expressed his delight with the result, but assured that there is still work to be done when the two sides meet again on 17 March.

Quoted by AS after Wednesday’s win, he said: “I'm very happy. It was a very difficult game; we all know the importance and size of Real Madrid. That is why I say that I am very happy and I’m sure I will always remember this great night.

“But now we have to focus on the return leg. There is nothing done or resolved, we do not trust it: it’s Real Madrid. They have a lot of quality and we have to be very concentrated.”

Manchester City were trailing for almost half an hour after Isco put Real Madrid in front. Jesus got the equaliser for City though, finding the back of the net with an excellent header. De Bruyne scored the winner with seven minutes to go, completing the comeback in style.

Jesus added: “It was a very mature performance because we conceded the first goal and managed to stay focused. Wednesday was one of the most important and significant goals of my career. I was ready and, when I learned that I was going to play, I knew I could do my best.”

The 22-year-old is enjoying another fine season for City, with 18 goals in 36 appearances. Jesus’ strike in Madrid made it five goals for him in the Champions League, with a goal contribution in five of his six European outings this campaign.

Manchester City have two vital away goals to take back to the Etihad, however slim the advantage is. Before the second leg in under three weeks, City have four crucial games, including the Carabao Cup final on Sunday against Aston Villa.

On the next few weeks, Jesus said: “We are now going to think about the Carabao Cup and then again in the Champions League. We had a great trip with a good result, but we have to remain focused on the return leg to give our best and ensure qualification.”
