Manchester United football director John Murtough has revealed manager Erik ten Hag was the "standout choice" to become the club's new leader.
The former Ajax boss has come in as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's successor, with Ralf Rangnick taking charge of the remainder of the 2021/22 season after the Norwegian's dismissal late last year.
He will be tasked with reviving the fortunes of one of the worst United teams ever that finished sixth in the Premier League with a points tally of 58 and a goal difference of zero.
Speaking at a fans' forum the week before Ten Hag was unveiled, Murtough revealed the Dutchman set out a “long-term vision to build a successful, exciting team” and was the candidate “most closely aligned with the identity and aims of Manchester United”.

“He showed passion, energy and enthusiasm for the challenge,” Murtough added.
Off-field changes are also taking place, with the appointment of the club's first ever director of data science being coupled with plans to redevelop their training facilitites.
He added: “It’s all about making sure we are creating the right environment and culture in which players can perform to their maximum potential.”
The United squad are due to return from their holidays on 27 June before a pre-season schedule which will see them face Atletico Madrid, Liverpool, Melbourne Victory, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.
