Dean Henderson looks likely to return to Manchester United next season, with Sheffield United already in the marker for a replacement goalkeeper.
The 23-year-old enjoyed an outstanding season in what was his second campaign on loan at Sheffield United, while United's number one David de Gea endured rather contrasting fortunes - making a string of errors throughout 2019/20.
As a result, Henderson is likely to stay at Old Trafford - pushing Sergio Romero aside in the process - and begin challenging for the number one spot. And as highlighted by the Express, Sheffield United have already begun the search for a new goalkeeper by targeting Bournemouth goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
Although Blades manager Chris Wilder is keen to secure a deal quickly, the south Yorkshire club’s first offer - around the £12m mark - was rejected by Bournemouth on Thursday morning, despite their relegation to the Championship.
Henderson's impressive campaign saw him keep 13 clean sheets in 36 appearances. It meant the Englishman finished joint third in the Golden Glove race, tied with Alisson, Kasper Schmeichel, Rui Patrício and De Gea.
With a return to Manchester imminent, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a decision to make over who should be his first-choice goalkeeper. De Gea remains the preferred option in goal - owing to his huge wages and trust that he's built up over the years - but his increased number of errors means the Norwegian will welcome added competition for places.
The Englishman has been at Manchester United since 2011, joining the academy as a 14-year-old from Carlisle United. He is yet to make his senior debut for the Red Devils, having been loaned out to four different clubs in the last four years.
Henderson has been commended in many circles for his performances this season, and was named Sheffield United’s Young Player of the Year. The 23-year-old has also been nominated for the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season award, featuring as the only goalkeeper on the eight-man shortlist.
His performances helped Sheffield United finish ninth in their first season back in the top flight; their equal highest finish in 28 years.
