Crystal Palace 1-0 Man Utd: Player ratings as United finish horrific season with defeat

Manchester United will play in the Europa League next season despite losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday afternoon.

Before the game United knew that defeat would open the door for West Ham to leapfrog them into sixth. Despite an early scare when the Hammers went 1-0 up against Brighton, David Moyes' side failed to capitalise in the end, eventually succumbing to a 3-1 defeat.

Wilfried Zaha was the game's only scorer and the Red Devils' display gave incoming manager Erik ten Hag - who was watching on from the stands - little to get excited about.

It took 14 minutes for the game's first effort on goal with Vicente Guaita sticking a hand out to prevent Edinson Cavani's bobbling finish from creeping in.

After a quiet start the contest threatened to spark to life just before the half-hour mark. First Anthony Elanga burst free and his pass only narrowly evaded Bruno Fernandes at the back post.

Palace then had their first shots when Zaha cut inside like only he can and forced David de Gea into a reaction save, and Jeffrey Schlupp arrived in the box perfectly before shooting straight at the United keeper.

Eight minutes before the break Palace took the lead through their talisman. Zaha danced past two United players and then let loose a pearoller which nestled delicately into the bottom corner.

United headed down the tunnel seventh in the Premier League due to West Ham winning 1-0 and despite needing a goal, the visitors did not start the second half well. Fortunately, a Brighton equaliser soon moved them back up to sixth.

It took until the hour mark for some meaningful action back at Selhurst Park, with Hannibal Mejbri's dipping shot from the edge of the box forcing Guaita into a scrambled save.

Palace looked more menacing overall, and Conor Gallagher dragged a shot wide from the edge of the box when he might have done better. The Eagles threatened from set pieces, as did United at times with Scott McTominay seeing a back-post effort saved 16 minutes from time.

Odsonne Edouard could have then put the game to bed, but he dallied too long when through on goal with Harry Maguire making an important tackle.

With sixth placed assured thanks to further Brighton goals, United ambled through the final 10 minutes in the sun with neither side coming close to adding to the scoreline.

The result ensured Palace finished 12th in the Premier League, capping off a season of progress under Patrick Vieira.

Here are your player ratings for both teams...

1. Crystal Palace (4-3-3)

GK: Vicente Guaita - 6/10 - Made an acrobatic save to deny Hannibal in the second half. Overall, a pretty quiet day.

RB: Nathaniel Clyne - 7/10 -
Caused no issues by Hannibal for the most part. Has finished the season so strongly.

CB: Joel Ward - 8/10 -
Stepped in for the injured Marc Guehi and did not miss a beat. Distribution may not be as good but he's a great defender as evidence by one great recovery tackle to deny Hannibal.

CB: Joachim Andersen - 8/10 -
A largely comfortable afternoon. This display sealed his status as the Premier League player who's completed the most long passes this season.

LB: Tyrick Mitchell - 7/10 -
Nervy start where he was caught out of position a couple of times. Gradually became more comfortable.

CM: Conor Gallagher - 7/10 -
Full of dynamism and gave United's midfielders the runaround. Palace will find it so hard to replace their player of the season.

CM: Will Hughes - 7/10 -
Provided Palace with some protection and kept them ticking over.

CM: Jeffrey Schlupp - 7/10 -
Impressed with a couple of runs into the box and never gave United's midfield a moment's rest.

RW: Jesurun Rak-Sakyi - 5/10 -
Got a great reaction on what was his full debut for the Eagles. Looked understandably nervy and slipped just before what could have been his big moment in the first half. Improved a little after the break.

ST: Odsonne Edouard - 3/10 -
Seemed to be frustrating his teammates with his pressing early on. Needed to be more decisive and assertive in the final third. Booked.

LW: Wilfried Zaha - 7/10 -
It had to be him who opened the scoring against his former employers - and what a goal it was too. Faded a little after the interval.

SUB: Chiekhou Kouyate - 6/10 - His introduction facilitated a move to a back three.

SUB: Eberechi Eze - N/A

SUB: James McArthur - N/A

2. Manchester United (4-2-3-1)

GK: David de Gea - 6/10 - Made a couple of important stops in the first half but could not stop Zaha opening the scoring.

RB: Diogo Dalot - 4/10 -
Was busy in the first half, producing a mixed bag of competence and incompetence. Zaha had him on toast more than once. Booked for a wild lunge.

CB: Victor Lindelof - 4/10 -
Has no answer to Palace on the break at times. Positioning seems suspect.

CB: Harry Maguire - 3/10 -
Played like a man who badly needs a summer off to rediscover himself. Almost nothing he tried came off.

LB: Alex Telles - 6/10 -
Burst forward a couple of times. Dealt with Palace's young full debutant easily.

CM: Fred - 4/10 -
Guilty of more than one aimless hoof upfield. Deservedly subbed.

CM: Scott McTominay - 4/10 -
The timing of his challenges was almost always off.

RW: Anthony Elanga - 4/10 -
Spurned United's best chance of the first half. Generally wasteful.

AM: Bruno Fernandes - 3/10 -
Muscled off the ball on more than one occasion. Another one who needs a reset this summer.

LW: Hannibal Mejbri - 5/10 -
Highlight of his first half display was getting booked for tussling with Zaha. Had one decent effort after that.

ST: Edinson Cavani - 4/10 -
Looked a bit rusty when presented with shooting opportunities. Link-up was okay at times.

SUB: Juan Mata - 5/10

SUB: Shola Shoretire - 5/10

SUB: Alejandro Garnacho - N/A
