Aymeric Laporte Sets New Premier League Record for Most Wins in First 50 Appearances

Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte set a new Premier League record in Wednesday night’s routine 2-0 victory over West Ham at the Etihad Stadium, with the Frenchman winning more of his first 50 games in the competition than anyone else ever has.

Following what was then a club record transfer from Athletic Bilbao in January 2018, Laporte emerged as City’s most important defender last season and was sorely missed during his lengthy injury absence earlier this campaign.

Laporte reached a half century of Premier League appearances against West Ham and no other player can match the 43 wins he can boast at that milestone.

The previous record was 42 wins from 50 appearances and was jointly held by City teammate Ederson and former Chelsea title winners Didier Drogba and Arjen Robben.

In six Premier League appearances this season, Laporte has won five and drawn one. It is rather telling that the week after he was lost to injury, City were stunned 3-2 by Norwich.

Last season, Laporte played 35 Premier League games and won 29 of them. In nine Premier League appearances in 2017/18 immediately after his arrival from Spain, the defender impressively never experienced anything other than victory as City marched towards 100 points.

50 games, 43 wins, three draws and four defeats. Such a record is remarkable.

During Laporte’s injury absence from the start of September through to the middle of January, City struggled. A team that has been so used to winning for two years lost five times in 19 games while he was out, and once again after his comeback when he was rested.

To date, Laporte has still never played at senior international level for France, despite his obvious quality. He had finally been called up for the September international break, only to cruelly suffer his injury just a few days after the squad was announced and had to withdraw.

If he can prove his fitness over the coming weeks, a place at Euro 2020 is still up for grabs.
