Maynard said “It’s another one of those afternoons where if we’re going to defend as we did at times [against Salford] then you can’t win games of football consistently at this level.

“If you look at the Bradford game, you can see that we didn’t put a foot wrong, and every time we defended our box, everyone was in the right place and with the man they’d been assigned to mark.

“Then you look at this game, you could see there were runners getting free and running beyond the defence. We can’t have that, because at this level you get punished and we have been on this occasion and a few times before.

“Tactically speaking, [Salford] went man-for-man, so we had to have two sitting midfielders in the end and could pull another man out to leave the space for the forward players.

“When teams come and play man-for-man like that, it is hard to make it a game where you see that passion from the first whistle because it ends up being a match where we have to kick it long and play around second balls.

“We did do that part well, no team has had more than 350 passes against [Salford] since their new gaffer has come in, so it is clear they are good at what they do.

“It’s been really tough, we want to give our fans more to shout about because they really helped us again here but we can’t win games defending as we have done.”
